new ears

happy 2008!
it was a little bit tough for me as i had no one to do anything with, but i forced myself in to the city and met julie after she had thrown confetti. the city was crowded with people who couldnt understand why they werent allowed anywhere near times square. its blocked off for miles around and only people at private parties can enter. i wandered up 9th avenue and saw some cool things:
-a conga line of old people in hats burst from the doors of a restaurant and then conga-ed back inside
-an early 90's "gang" of kids with authentic flat top amazing hair cuts, denim vests, colouful high tops, fluro and a real square boom box busting out tunes. i wanted to ask if i could join them but they were definitely too cool for school
-a lady did an amazingly polite quick vomit and then continued walking in her high heels
-lots of men publicly peeing

at midnight people swarmed to where they thought they'd see the ball drop and were confused when they couldnt see it. no one counted down and people just mashed into a crowd and then cheered a bit. it was over quickly and i think i mumbled "happy new year" to myself and then kept walking.

i made it in to times square for the aftermath and 'somewhere over the rainbow' was playing and bits of confetti were still fluttering down. i met julie and her unwanted admirer robert and we had champagne at roberts office. then we got let in to the official confetti throwers party (tipped as being one of the biggest parties around. pffhah) at an irish pub and drank apple martinis.

julie and i concocted an elaborate ruse where we pretended to catch the subway home, waited for robert to board his train and then caught one downtown to the meat packing district. drunken strangers on the street yelled happy new year. we wandered trying to find a bar on bleeker st but couldnt. instead we took photos of carrie bradshaw's stoop from sex in the city. then we went home to bed.

2008 here i come.
