trick or treat

weazle and i were very excited about halloween. this is how we dressed up. little did we realise what a HUGE thing it is here. i mean H U G E.

so we've had some lovely sunny days lately. freezing cold but sunny- kind of like winter in canberra.

the other day we trained down to coney island and brighton beach. it was SO great. it was another bright freeeeezing day and coney island was closed and creepy (apparently its closed forever now? boo hoo) and the boardwalk was full of old people sitting and watching the sea. i imagined it to be like summer in russia- its so weird to be at the beach when its that cold and deserted. we went to a scary russian restaurant called 'tatiana's' right next door to 'tatiana's grill'. the waitress could hardly speak english and her russian accent was so thick. she was old and fake tanned. the waiter was just wearing a big wool coat. the tables were plastic and dirty and the food was super expensive. we were afraid of saying/ordering the wrong thing. we watched the dodgy men drinking wodka or something in the dark depths of the restaurant. it was so GANGSTER and fun!! i loved seeing some of brooklyn from the train, like the huge huge graveyard. it was cool to see the movie 'we own the night' last night and recognise all the places they were! down there in russian brighton beach.

yesterday we walked around greenwich village and book/costume shopped.

today i got a job interview! on monday for a job as a seamstress. otherwise wens and i had brunch in hoboken and watched heaps of kids come in to the restaurant trick or treat-ing. so many people were dressed up in the middle of the day- even all the people who worked at the cafe we ate at.

juan filled 100 bags for the kids and we were totes excited and had all the lights on to let kids know we were nice/safe/lolly givers. unfortunately this is a dodgy neighbourhood so we only gave out maybe 1/4 of the bags and most people weren't even dressed up. some were dirty and only had plastic bags to get booty in. the wierdest was a little maybe 5 year old girl who only had 3 teeth that WERE GOLD! we were weirded out!

we then drove and trained in to town for the huge parade and let me just say it was MAYHEM. hours of fighting our way through huge huge crowds. everyone, and i mean everyone was dressed up. i've never seen anything like it. i laughed at:
a man dressed as frida khalo
a fellow mullet wearer who said hi to wens
the new york jedi's with their light sabers
many strangely dressed cross-dressers- like male geisha
people who called me mrs potato head hahaha
a man was a pirate with his kid as a parrot on his shoulder

boy. sooooo many things i never even thought of dressing up as. it blew my mind. wens got a sore throat and now feels sickly so we came home. it was almost too much to handle anyway. phew.

happy halloween!
