jack frost sunday

i put on as many layers as i could manage- long johns, jeans, leg warmers, scarf, two hoods. and ventured out into the crisp crunchy snow. for the first few steps i just smiled and looked down at the snow. i picked some up and it was light as air. i caught the train in and couldnt read. i had to look out the window and marvel at the snow on everything. covering cars, on rooftops, clinging to leaves and railings. snow seems so nice and unprejudiced. it just covers everything, no matter the shape or size.

i went to the columbus circle markets where i'd painted the stall to see how it was going. i bought a hat from ume and she gave me a discount. its reversible and itchy. it came with a little pin with an owl on it. it started snowing again and seemed to get even colder so i caught the train downtown in search of an art fair. i went to the wrong grand st (i later realise). i walked around soho. hardly anyone was out and everyone was slipping on the icy snow. i slipped while crossing the street, and of course had to utter an inappropriately loud noise that just drew more attention to my clumsy slip. it was something like a "nweeEP" that went up at the end. a silly noise. i dont know why i have to make so much noise when i trip (and i always trip). luckily i didnt fall flat, and if i had, i happened to be crossing in front of an ambulance anyway.

i had lunch in a warm wooden french bakery. the soup was finished so i had some fresh organic bread with black bean hummus. i drank a good coffee (its been so long) and read my book. i'm reading john steinbeck's east of eden. i'm really enjoying it.

i couldnt find the market, and i failed in my mission for the day which was to buy at least one christmas present. instead i bought myself a hat and an overpriced lunch. it was ridiculously cold on the way home and it got dark around 4:30. everyone says only the first snow is nice in new york, then it starts to get slushy and dirty. it was already dirty today, and people dont pick up their dog poop in the snow. but other than that i think i love the snow. kids were throwing it at each other like a movie.

i still need to move my bed into my new room but no one is here to lug heavy pieces of furniture.
